The United States Merchant Marine Academy defeated 8th ranked Nassau Community College on Wednesday night with the score of 22-17. Nassau took an early lead with a forfeit at 125. The lead was cut in half with a Mariners win by freshman Tom Healy over Hector Paez 13-7. Buddy Watson KP tied the score with a 12-5 win over Jayson Kim at 141. Nassau won the next 3 matches to take a 17-6 lead. Kyle Diesel stopped Nassau's run with an 8-0 major decision over Gildazio Hermes at 174 to close the deficit to 17-10. The Mariners won the next two matches with decisions by Captain Erik Schott at 184 over Daniel Sutherland and Tyler Russell at 197 over 12th ranked Kyle Folk-Freud to set up the decisive match at heavy weight with the Mariners trailing 17-16. For the final match of the night Dan Wilke, a senior for the Mariners, faced Yaseen Musassar, the 9th ranked heavy weight in the country for Nassau. Wilke dominated the match and picked up a fall at 1:33 to clinch the dual for the Mariners. Coach Ilaria stated after the match that he is very happy with his young team's performance starting 5 Freshmen and 1 Sophomore, and looks forward to this weekend's competition at the North-South Duals hosted by Ursinus College. On Saturday January 7th USMMA will square up against four ranked teams including #7 Cortland State College, #12 York College, #14 Wilkes University, and #21 The College of New Jersey. The Mariners went 4-0 at the North-South Duals last year with wins over four ranked teams.
