Willard Named 2016 ECAC DIII Metro/Upstate Women's Lacrosse Rookie Of The Year
In early June, the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) announced its postseason honors for the 2016 women’s lacrosse season and USMMA freshman Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine) was selected as the Rookie of the Year among all eligible first-year student-athletes in the Division III Metropolitan/Upstate Region.

The six U.S. Merchant Marine Academy spring teams garnered a total of 23 student-athletes, collectively, on the Landmark Conference Spring Honor Roll, the league announced on Tuesday morning. In total, 418 student-athletes received recognition from the conference’s nine institutions.

On Sunday, the USMMA women’s lacrosse team faced industry-rival school Maine Maritime in a “neutral-site game” at Brooks Stadium. Merchant Marine shut out Maine Maritime by the final score of 16-0 to record its first two-game win streak ever, and it’s also the first time that the program has had multiple wins in a single season. USMMA improves to 2-0, while Maine Maritime falls to 0-4.

Thanks to a strong second half, the USMMA women’s lacrosse team started the 2016 season off on a good note on Tuesday night with a 12-10 victory over Purchase College at Brooks Stadium. The Mariners trailed the Panthers, 5-3, after the first 30 minutes, but outscored the visitors, 9-5, in the second half for the win.

Back in May, the Landmark Conference announced the league’s spring season All-Sportsmanship Teams and USMMA had six student-athletes selected to the squads for their displays of sportsmanship throughout the season. The All-Sportsmanship Team includes one student-athlete from each institution for each sport and is selected by the players and coaches from their respective team.

On Friday, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Athletics Department announced that it has accepted an invitation to join the Skyline Conference, effective beginning with the 2016-17 athletic seasons. The action was voted on by the Skyline Conference Presidents’ Council and was officially approved this week.
