Women’s Lax Will Defend Skyline Title After 23-8 Home Win Over SUNY Maritime In Semifinal Action Wednesday

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (May 1, 2019) – The USMMA women's lacrosse team earned its second-straight trip to the Skyline Championship Finals with a 23-8 home victory over visiting SUNY Maritime in the semifinals on Wednesday night at Brooks Stadium. The victory kept the Mariners undefeated at 16-0, as they move on to Saturday's championship game where they'll look to defend their crown against #2 seed Farmingdale State at home. In defeat, the Privateers end the season 8-6. 

Senior Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine) led all players in the game and set a new Academy record for points in a game, as she recorded 12 points on five goals and seven assists. To watch the postgame interview with Willard, follow this link

Both senior Jessica Reilly (Sayville, N.Y.) and freshman Jessie Wohner (Norfolk, Va.) added four goals and two assists apiece, while junior Grace McHugh (Sturbridge, Mass.) found the back of the net four times and senior Maura Malone (Yorktown, Va.) chipped in with three goals and an assist. 

Freshman Maddie Schmidt (Mechanicsville, Va.) added to the offense with two goals and junior Angela Parker (Bowie, Md.) had one tally and dished out an assist. Rounding out the Mariners on the scoresheet was senior Catherine Livi (Fair Lawn, N.J.), who recoded an assist on the Mariners' last goal. 

Reilly led all players in the game with 13 draw controls, while Willard secured up seven. Senior goalie Hannah Gizzi (Finksburg, Md.) made six saves for the victory and also scooped up a game-high four groundballs while tying for the game-best with three caused turnovers. 

The Mariners raced out to a 4-0 lead over the first nine minutes, and then led 6-1 at 17:01 before the Privateers went on a 3-1 run to cut the advantage to 7-4 at 10:42. Merchant Marine responded with the final five goals of the half to take a 12-4 lead into halftime. 

SUNY Maritime out-scored the Mariners 4-3 over the first 15 minutes of the second half, but USMMA finished strong with eight straight goals in the final 15 to claim the victory. 

The Privateers were led by senior Krista Deleva, who tallied five points on three goals and two assists, while sophomore Sara Wright had a team-best four goals. Senior Catherine Pfundstein also found the back of the net on the night. Senior Ciara Murphy tied Gizzi for the game-high with three caused turnovers. In net, junior Esmeralda Hernandez made 13 saves in the losing effort.

The Mariners will host the #2 seed Farmingdale State Rams this Saturday, May 4, in the Skyline Finals. Opening draw is scheduled for 12-noon at Brooks Stadium. Live stats and a live video stream of the Finals on Saturday will be available with links on the USMMA Women's Lacrosse Schedule Page
