Women’s Lax Clinches #1 Seed In Skyline Tourney With Home Win Over Mount St. Mary

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 23, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's lacrosse team sailed past visiting Skyline Conference opponent Mount St. Mary, 19-3, on Tuesday evening at Brooks Stadium. With the win, the Mariners remain undefeated, moving to 14-0 (6-0 Skyline) and tying the program wins record set last year. The victory also clinches the top seed for USMMA in the upcoming Skyline Tournament. The Knights fall to 1-11 (1-5 Skyline) in defeat. 

The Mariners scored the first six goals of the game and did not look back. Their lead hit double-digits at 5:12 of the first half and stayed above 10 the remainder of the night. 

Senior Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine) led all players with six points on five goals and one assist, while two other Mariners recorded four-point nights – freshman Maddie Schmidt (Mechanicsville, Va.) with four goals and classmate Jessie Wohner (Norfolk, Va.) with three goals and one helper. 

Junior Angela Parker (Bowie, Md.) and Grace McHugh (Sturbridge, Mass.) both had three points each, Parker with two tallies and one assist and McHugh with one goal and two helpers. Seniors Jessica Reilly (Sayville, N.Y.) and Maura Malone (Yorktown, Va.) rounded out Merchant Marine's scorers with two goals each. 

Malone and Reilly both also secured a game-high six draw controls, while Reilly led all players with nine groundballs and Schmidt gobbled up five GBs. Reilly and junior Chelsea Chamberlain (South Setauket, N.Y.) both had a game-high three caused turnovers. 

In net, senior Hannah Gizzi (Finksburg, Md.) made three saves in 47 minutes of action to record the victory, while freshman Sunny Rooney (Ardsley, Pa.) came in in relief for the final 13 minutes and made one save. 

For the Knights, freshman Megan Shalvey and junior Courtney Condron both had two points – Shalvey on two goals and Condron on a goal and an assist. Sophomore Hope Blanc chipped in with a helper as well. Junior Meghan Cumming had a team-best three draw controls, while Condron and sophomore goalie Jackie Finkel both had three groundballs each. Finkel finished the night with 11 saves. 

The Mariners will close out the regular season this Friday night, April 26, with a road game at Skyline opponent Purchase College. Opening draw is scheduled for 7 p.m. Any live coverage of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Women's Lacrosse Schedule Page
