Mariners Sail Past Rival Privateers, 16-3, For Fourth-Straight Sound Shootout Win

BRONX, N.Y. (April 13, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's lacrosse team cruised over Skyline-rival SUNY Maritime, 16-3, the annual "Sound Shootout" game on Saturday afternoon at the Privateers' Reinhart Field. The Mariners remain perfect and move to 11-0 (4-0 Skyline) on the season, while Maritime falls to 6-4 (2-2 Skyline). 

Four USMMA players recorded multi-goal games on the afternoon. Freshman Jessie Wohner (Norfolk, Va.) and senior Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine) led all scorers with six points apiece. Wohner buried a team-best five goals with one assist, while Willard dished out a team-high four assists and scored twice. Seniors Jessica Reilly (Sayville, N.Y.) and Maura Malone (Yorktown, Va.) both gobbled up five groundballs, tying a team-high. Reilly also had five points on the day with four goals and an assist. 

Junior Angela Parker (Bowie, Md.) netted three goals and classmate Grace McHugh (Sturbridge, Mass.) contributed a tally and one helper. Sophomore Kelly Midas (Clarksville, Md.) tied a team-best with five groundballs, while also chipping in with a goal and an assist. Freshman Maddie Schmidt (Mechanicsville, Va.) caused a team-best four turnovers and tied a team-high with five groundballs. 

The Mariner defense forced 22 Privateer turnovers for the game. Senior goalie Hannah Gizzi (Finksburg, Md.) got the victory after stopping eight shots. 

After trading the first four goals, USMMA scored seven of the next eight to build up a 9-3 halftime lead. The Mariners had all seven goals in the second half and blanked the hosts en route to the 16-3 decision. 

Senior Krista Deleva led SUNY Maritime with three points and a team-best three assists. Classmate Catherine Pfundstein found the back of net twice and sophomore Sara Wright took a team-best five draw controls. Junior Esmeralda Hernandez stopped 15 shots in a losing effort.
