KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 3, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's lacrosse team cruised over Skyline opponent Farmingdale State, 12-4, on Wednesday evening at Brooks Stadium. The Mariners remain undefeated and move to 8-0 (1-0 Skyline) on the season, while the Rams fall to 1-10 (0-1 Skyline).
Two USMMA players recorded hat tricks on the night, as senior Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine) led all scorers in the contest with five goals, while also claiming a team-high four draw controls, and freshman Jessie Wohner (Norfolk, Va.) found the back cage four times. Senior Jessica Reilly (Sayville, N.Y.) caused a team-high five turnovers, while also gobbling up six groundballs and scoring twice and junior Grace McHugh (Sturbridge, Mass.) chipped in with a goal.
The Mariner defense forced 29 Farmingdale State turnovers for the game. Senior goalie Hannah Gizzi (Finksburg, Md.) got the victory after stopping 11 shots and scooping up a team-high seven groundballs.
USMMA scored the first three goals of the game and led 4-1 at halftime. The Mariners took over in the second half, tallying five of the first six goals and burying the last four to claim a 12-4 victory.
For the Rams, junior Courtney Gendels led the way with two goals and classmate Sam Shelton tied a team-high with four draw controls and scored once. Sophomore Hailey Perez found the back of the net once and freshman Hailey Kirby won four draws, tying a team-high. Freshman goalie Ayana Hudson made 13 stops in the losing effort.
