BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. (March 16, 2019) – The USMMA women's lacrosse team won its non-conference contest against industry-rival school Mass. Maritime, 16-1, on Saturday morning at the Buccaneers' Clean Harbors Stadium. With the win, the Mariners improve to 4-0, while the Bucs fall to 1-3 in defeat.
Eight different Mariners found the back of the net on the day, with senior Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine) leading the way with four goals and one assist. Freshman Jessie Wohner (Norfolk, Va.) recorded a hat trick, while three others had multi-goal games – senior Jessica Reilly (Sayville, N.Y.) with two goals and two assists, junior Grace McHugh (Sturbridge, Mass.) with two goals and one helper and sophomore Grace Neary (Highland Falls, N.Y.) with two tallies.
Senior Maura Malone (Yorktown, Va.), junior Angela Parker (Bowie, Md.) and sophomore Kelly Midas (Clarksville, Md.) all found twine twice each, with Parker also dishing out a game-high three assists. Freshman Maddie Schmidt (Mechanicsville, Va.) added two assists in the contest.
Reilly also recorded five draw controls, while four Mariners tied for the team-high with three groundballs apiece – Wohner, Midas, Neary and Malone. Midas and senior goalie Hannah Gizzi (Finksburg, Md.) both had two caused turnovers each. Gizzi made five saves for the victory between the pipes.
For Mass. Maritime, sophomore Casey Sullivan scored the Buccaneers' lone goal with just 14 seconds left in the game. It was assisted by junior Cammi Balentine. Sophomore Jennifer Leung led all players with four caused turnovers, while Balentine scooped up a game-high five groundballs and freshman Anna Deely had a team-best three draw controls. Freshman goalie Laura Kleber suffered the loss, totaling six saves over the 60 minutes.
The Mariners return home this Wednesday night, March 20, for a non-conference contest against Ramapo College beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Brooks Stadium. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Women's Lacrosse Schedule Page.
