Mariners Cruise Past Knights To Book Ticket To Conference Finals

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (May 2, 2018) – The top-seeded U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's lacrosse team cruised over visiting #4 seed Mount St. Mary, 16-1, on Wednesday evening at Brooks Stadium in the semifinals of the 2018 Skyline Conference Championships. The Mariners tenth-straight victory improved their record to 12-2, and advances the Mariners to the Skyline Championship Game this Saturday, May 5, while the Knights ended the season at 7-8. 

Junior Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine) led all scorers in the game with nine points on five goals and a team-high four assists. 

Six different Mariners found the back of the net on the night. Willard and classmate Jessica Reilly (Sayville, N.Y.) both with five goals apiece, while Reilly posted game-highs in two other statistical categories, winning six draw controls and causing three turnovers. 

Junior Maura Malone (Yorktown, Va.) put up three points with two goals and an assist to go along with two draw controls and caused two turnovers. Freshman Kelly Midas (Clarksville, Md.) had three points with two tallies and one helper and also won five draw controls on the evening. 

Junior Catherine Livi (Fair Lawn, N.J.) had two points with a goal and assist and freshman Grace Neary (Highland Falls, N.Y.) tallied a goal and also caused two turnovers. 

The Mariner defense forced 16 Mount St. Mary turnovers for the game. Junior goalie Hannah Gizzi (Finksburg, Md.) made six saves and led the team with five groundballs. 

USMMA scored all 13 goals of the first half and outshot Mt. St. Mary 23-4 to build a 13-0 halftime lead. The second half followed the same script, as the Mariners scored the first three goals before the Knights spoiled the shutout late for a 16-1 result. 

For the Knights, senior Christina Ryan led the way with a goal and five shots. Junior goalie Amanda Picillo stopped nine Mariner shots. 

Merchant Marine will play for the Conference title this Saturday, May 5, at home against #3 seed St. Joseph's-Long Island. Opening draw is scheduled for 12-noon at Brooks Stadium.
