KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 20, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's lacrosse team lost its home rivalry game to Coast Guard, 16-12, on Tuesday evening at Brooks Stadium. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 3-2, while the Bears improve to 5-1 with the victory.
Five different players found the scoresheet for USMMA, with juniors Jessica Reilly (Sayville, N.Y.) and Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine) both leading the way with five points. Reilly scored five times, while Willard added three goals and two assists each. Classmate Maura Malone (Yorktown, Va.) contributed two goals, while freshmen Kelly Midas (Clarksville, Md.) and Grace Neary (Highland Falls, N.Y.) both found the back of the net once apiece.
Reilly led all players with seven draw controls and tied for the game-high with three caused turnovers, while Malone had a team-best five groundballs to go along with five draw controls. In goal, junior Hannah Gizzi (Finksburg, Md.) made seven saves in the 60 minutes of action.
Coast Guard jumped out to a 4-0 lead over the first 15-plus minutes and expanded it to 7-1 late in the opening half before taking an 8-2 advantage into the halftime break.
The Mariners scored five of the first eight goals of the second half to come within just four goals, 11-7, with 12:01 to play, however the Bears responded with four of the next five. USMMA didn't go down quietly, though, as they tallied three straight goals to come within four yet again, 15-11, at 2:24, but it wasn't enough as the two teams traded late goals and CGA held on for the victory.
For Coast Guard, Marietta Davis had a game-high six points with four goals and two assists, while freshman Brenna Farrington also registered four tallies and senior Daria McKenna had four points with a goal and three helpers. Freshman goalie Rebecca Dolan made 15 saves for the victory.
The Mariners return to action next Tuesday, March 27, when they travel to New Jersey to take on Ramapo College. Opening draw is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Roadrunners' Athletic Center Turf.
