PURCHASE, N.Y. (April 25, 2017) – The USMMA women's lacrosse team was defeated on the road by Skyline Conference opponent Purchase College, 15-14, on Tuesday night up in Westchester County. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 4-7 (2-5 Skyline) on the season, while the Panthers improve to 4-7 (3-5 Skyline).
The Mariners fell into a 5-1 hole early through the opening seven minutes of the game, but fought back to tie the game up at 5-all at 9:53 with four-straight tallies. Purchase scored the next two goals before Merchant Marine finished the final two minutes with two out of three markers and the Panthers led, 8-7 at halftime.
Purchase opened the second half strong, scoring four of the first five goals to take a 12-8 advantage. USMMA responded exactly the same way with four of five to come back within one, 13-12, with just 5:10 remaining. Twice in the final five minutes the Panthers scored and the Mariners answered back with a tally of their own each time, however Merchant Marine was unable to find the tying goal as time ran out on their final chance.
Freshman Grace McHugh (Sturbridge, Mass.) led the Mariners with six points on three goals and three assists. She also picked up a game-high four groundballs. Classmate Angela Parker (Bowie, Md.) contributed a career-high five goals and recorded a game-best seven draw controls.
Senior A Jordan Pappas (Howell, N.J.) also had a career-high in goals, as she found the back of the net four times on the night, while classmate Gabby Marionakis (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) and junior Sarah Milafsky (Aurora, Colo.) rounded out the Mariner scorers with one tally each. Milafsky also led the Mariners with two caused turnovers.
In goal, sophomore Hannah Gizzi (Finksburg, Md.) made seven saves Merchant Marine.
Purchase was led by junior Emma Porter, who registered a game-high eight points on six goals and two assists. Classmate Kelly Turtell added seven points with three goals and a game-best four assists, while fellow junior Zoe Hines chipped in with five points (four goals, one helper). Senior Kelsey Straub and freshman Meaghan Gillen also scored for the Panthers.
Porter picked up a team-high three groundballs, while Turtell had four draw controls and Hines led all players in the game with three caused turnovers. Junior goalie Cynthia Plackis earned the win after making four saves in the first half before giving way to junior Allyson Wong, who preserved the win with five stops in the second half.
The Mariners close out the season on Saturday, April 29, with a Senior Day matchup against Skyline opponent Mount St. Vincent. Opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Brooks Stadium. Before the game begins, the USMMA Women's Lacrosse program will pay tribute to its three graduating seniors with a special Senior Day ceremony.
