Mariners Suffer Skyline Loss At St. Joseph’s-L.I. On Saturday

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (April 22, 2017) – On Saturday, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's lacrosse team was defeated by St. Joseph's of Long Island, 17-6, in a road Skyline Conference contest out in Suffolk County. The Mariners' record falls to 4-6 (2-4 Skyline) with the loss, while the Golden Eagles improve to 7-8 (6-1 Skyline).
 
Freshman Grace McHugh (Sturbridge, Mass.) led the way for USMMA with three goals and one assist, while classmate Angela Parker (Bowie, Md.) added a goal and two helpers. Senior Gabby Marionakis (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) and junior Sarah Milafsky (Aurora, Colo.) also found the back of the net for the Mariners.
 
McHugh also won a team-best five draw controls, while sophomore goalie Hannah Gizzi (Finskburg, Md.) picked up a game-high 10 groundballs. Gizzi also made eight saves over the 60 minutes. Freshman defender Chelsea Chamberlain (South Setauket, N.Y.) led Merchant Marine with two caused turnovers.
 
For St. Joseph's, sophomore Nicole Stoppelli recorded nine points on four goals and five assists, while senior Brooke Kreuscher scored five times and dished out one helper. Junior Kristin Carroll added four goals and one assist and freshman Diana Johnston contributed two tallies and an assist. Two other Golden Eagles scored on the day.
 
Carroll and sophomore Samantha Caruso tied for the team-high with three groundballs, Carroll also led all players with three caused turnovers on the day and Johnston won a game-high seven draw controls. In goal, sophomore Linday Ramos made six saves to record the victory.
 
Up next, the Mariners will travel up to Purchase, N.Y., this coming Tuesday, April 25, for a 7 p.m. opening draw against the Panthers. Live stats for the Skyline Conference contest will be available at this link.
