Women’s Lacrosse Suffers 10-5 Loss At Old Westbury

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (April 8, 2017) – The USMMA women's lacrosse team lost to Skyline Conference opponent Old Westbury, 10-5, on the road Saturday afternoon at OW's Panther Park. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 4-3 (2-1 Skyline), while the Panthers improve to 3-7 (2-1 Skyline) with the victory.
 
Freshman Grace McHugh (Sturbridge, Mass.) netted her sixth hat-trick of the season, and fourth in a row, as she had three of Merchant Marine's goals on the day. Junior Sarah Milafsky (Aurora, Colo.) and sophomore Elizabeth Livi (Fair Lawn, N.J.) also found the back of the net for the Mariners, while senior Gabby Marionakis (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) contributed to the offense with an assist.
 
In goal, sophomore Hannah Gizzi (Finksburg, Md.) made 10 saves in the losing effort. She also led the Mariners with three caused turnovers and tied with four other players for the team-lead with two groundballs. Freshman Angela Parker (Bowie, Md.) won a game-high eight draw controls.
 
The first half was back-and-forth between USMMA scoring and Old Westbury responding with one of their own. McHugh, Milafsky and Livi's tallies were all answered by the Panthers and the score was tied, 3-3, at the end of 30 minutes.
 
OW took its first lead with two goals to open play in the second. McHugh netted her second of the day, but the Panthers would go on to score the next five goals before McHugh picked up the hat-trick with just two seconds left to play.
 
Freshman Rachel Phillips led Old Westbury with four goals, while junior Taylor Guarneri added three tallies. Three other players found the back of the net for the Panthers. Junior Danielle Weir led all players with three caused turnovers, while she and junior goalie Ashley Gugliuzzo both picked up a game-high four groundballs. Sophomore Natasha Treuman led OW with four draw controls.
 
Gugliuzzo earned the win between the pipes after she made nine saves for the Panthers.
 
Up next, the Mariners host undefeated and first-place Farmingdale State in Skyline Conference action on Thursday night, April 13. Opening draw is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Brooks Stadium.
