Willard Reaches 100 Career Points In 15-3 Road Skyline Win At SUNY Maritime

Box Score

BRONX, N.Y. (April 5, 2017) – Sophomore Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine) reached the 100-career point plateau on Wednesday night, as she tied for the game-high with seven points in USMMA's 15-3 road Skyline Conference victory over SUNY Maritime at the Privateers' Reinhart Field. The win improves the Mariners' record to 4-2 (2-0 Skyline), while Maritime falls to 1-5 (1-1 Skyline) with the loss.

Willard, who was already Merchant Marine's career-leader for points after her freshman year wrapped up in 2016, came into Wednesday night needing seven points to reach 100 and she got just that on five goals and two assists. The sophomore now has 77 goals and 23 assists for her career.

Freshman Grace McHugh (Sturbridge, Mass.) matched Willard exactly, finding the back of the net five times with two helpers. Senior A Jordan Pappas (Howell, N.J.) scored twice for the Mariners, freshman Angela Parker (Bowie, Md.) contributed with one goal and sophomores Elizabeth Livi (Fair Lawn, N.J.) and Lexi Ibach (Reading, Pa.) earned their first tallies of the season.

Parker scooped up a game-high six draw controls and she and Ibach both recorded a game-best three caused turnovers each. Pappas and sophomore goalie Hannah Gizzi (Finksburg, Md.) gobbled up four groundballs apiece to lead all players. In goal, Gizzi made nine saves to record the victory.

The Mariners quickly grabbed control in the game, scoring the first nine goals of the opening half before the Privateers finally got on the board with just 3:39 to go. The score was 10-1 at the halftime break. SUNY Maritime opened the scoring in the second half, but Merchant Marine responded with five straight goals, cursing on to the 12-goal victory.

The Privateers got two goals from sophomore Ciara Murphy and one from classmate Catherine Pfundstein, while junior Christa Case added an assist. Pfundstein led Maritime with four draw controls, freshman Elizabeth Millicker had a team-best three groundballs and junior Jessica Yee led the Privateer defense with two caused turnovers.

The Mariners return to the field this Saturday, April 8, when they travel to face Skyline Conference opponent Old Westbury. Opening draw is slated for 11 a.m. at Panther Park on the campus of The SUNY College at Old Westbury. Please Note: The start time for this game on Saturday has been moved up to an 11 a.m. start. Live stats will be available for the contest at this link.
