KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 1, 2017) – On Saturday, the USMMA women's lacrosse team defeated visiting Skyline Conference opponent Sage, 14-10, at Brooks Stadium. The victory was the program's first-ever triumph in conference action. With the win, the Mariners improve to 3-2 (1-0 Skyline), while the Gators fall to 1-6 (0-2 Skyline).
Sophomore Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine) scored five times to tie for the game-high, while classmate Hannah Gizzi (Finksburg, Md.) was strong in net, making 16 saves over the 60 minutes to earn the victory. Freshmen Grace McHugh (Sturbridge, Mass.) and Angela Parker (Bowie, Md.) contributed seven goals combined for Merchant Marine, as McHugh had four and Parker added three for her first career hat-trick.
Parker also dished out one assist on the afternoon and led all players in the game with 11 draw controls, while picking up a team-best four groundballs and causing a team-high three turnovers.
Also finding the back of the net for the Mariners were senior A Jordan Pappas (Howell, N.J.) and freshman Elena Chamberland (Lakeland, Fla.) – the first of her career. Gizzi scooped up three groundballs, and freshman Chelsea Chamberlain (South Setauket, N.Y.) and McHugh recorded two GBs each. Willard added three draw controls to her stat line as well.
For Sage, senior Monica Koralus scored five times to match Willard's mark and junior Torri Sperl added three tallies. Senior goalie Jackie St. Pierre made seven saves in the losing effort.
The Mariners are back in action on Wednesday night, April 5, for a showdown at rival SUNY Maritime College in the annual Sound Shootout game.
