KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 25, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday in a 14-5 home defeat to New Paltz at Brooks Stadium. The Mariners fall to 2-1 on the year, while the Hawks improve to 3-1.
Sophomore Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine) led USMMA with three goals, while freshman Grace McHugh (Sturbridge, Mass.) found the back of the net twice. Sophomore Lexi Ibach (Reading, Pa.) contributed to the Mariner offense with an assist. Freshman Angela Parker (Bowie, Md.) scooped up a game-high seven draw controls and McHugh had a team-best three groundballs.
In goal, sophomore Hannah Gizzi (Finksburg, Md.) made nine saves over the 60 minutes and also led all players in the game with six caused turnovers, while also recording two GBs. Junior Emily Finnin (Littleton, Colo.) led the Mariner defenders with two caused turnovers and two groundballs.
The Hawks were led by senior Melissa Wagner, who registered a game-high six points with three goals and three assists. Junior Caitlyn Morris added three goals and two helpers, while senior Nicole Gottschalk chipped in with three goals and one assist. Two other players – sophomore Taylor Russell and freshman Emily Puciloski – both scored twice and rookie Jennifer O'Leary also found the twine for the Hawks.
Sophomore goalie Kendra Dansereau made two saves for New Paltz to earn the victory between the pipes. Senior Nicole Stackpole had a team-high six draw controls and freshman Alicia Kennedy led all players in the game with five groundballs.
Up next, the Mariners will host Ramapo College this Tuesday night, March 28, in their final non-conference game of the season. Action is set to get underway at 7:30 p.m. at Brooks Stadium.
