In her very first career outing, freshman Grace McHugh (Sturbridge, Mass.) tied the USMMA program record for points in a single game with nine. She found the back of the net six times and dished out three assists. Sophomore Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine) – whose record McHugh tied – ended the day with seven points on four goals and three assists, while classmate Maura Malone (Yorktown, Va.) scored five goals for the Mariners.
Sophomore Catherine Livi (Fair Lawn, N.J.) tallied three goals and also had one helper, freshman Angela Parker (Bowie, Md.) added two goals and senior A Jordan Pappas (Howell, N.J.) rounded out the Merchant Marine scoring with one goal and one assist. Pappas led the Mariners with a game-high seven draw controls, while junior Rebecca Bessler (Kent, Wash.) led all players with five groundballs and Parker had team-best three caused turnovers.
In net, sophomore Hannah Gizzi (Finksburg, Md.) earned the victory, as she was only tested with two shots on goal over the 60 minutes and she made one save on the day.
The Mariners never trailed in the game and took a 15-0 lead into the halftime break. The Badgers, who fall to 0-2 on the season, got their lone goal of the game from the crosse of junior Nichole Weeks early in the second half.
Freshman goalie Heatherann Esden made nine saves in the losing effort.
The Mariners will return to the field next Saturday, March 18, when they host arch-rival Coast Guard for a 12-noon start at Brooks Stadium. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Women's Lacrosse Schedule Page.
