KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Feb. 28, 2017) – U.S. Merchant Marine Academy fifth-year women's lacrosse head coach Kyle Simensky announced the schedule for the Mariners' upcoming 2017 season on Tuesday. The Mariners are coming off their best year in program history, as they finished the 2016 campaign with an 8-6 record, the first winning season at Kings Point.
USMMA will play a total of 12 games this year – eight at home on Capt. Tomb Field at Brooks Stadium and just four away from the Academy. After four non-conference games to start the season, the Mariners will take on eight opponents from the newly-joined Skyline Conference the entire month of April with aspirations of reaching a conference tournament for the first time in program history.
The season begins with a five-game homestand, as action kicks off on Sunday, March 12, at home against Johnson State. The Mariners then host arch-rival Coast Guard in the annual Superintendents' Trophy game on Saturday, March 18. After a week of no games, New Paltz visits Kings Point on Saturday, March 25, before the final non-conference game of the year against Ramapo on Wednesday, March 28.
April opens with the final game of the homestand, the Skyline-opener against Sage on Saturday, April 1. The Mariners will then play back-to-back road games at SUNY Maritime on Wednesday, April 5, in the annual "Sound Shootout" game and at Old Westbury on Saturday, April 8.
On Thursday, April 13, the Rams of Farmingdale State College stop by Brooks Stadium for a Skyline contest, followed by the Mariners hosting Mount St. Mary on Wednesday, April 19.
Once again Merchant Marine will play two consecutive road games, at two-time defending Skyline champions St. Joseph's of Long Island on Saturday, April 22, and at Purchase on Tuesday, April 25. The regular season finale is scheduled for Saturday, April 29, against Mount St. Vincent in Kings Point.
The top six teams in the conference at the end of the regular season qualify for the Skyline Tournament, with the top two seeds earning a bye into the semifinals. The first round matchups will feature the #3 seed hosting the #6 seed and the #4 seed hosting the #5 seed on Tuesday, May 2. The semifinals are scheduled for Thursday, May 4, and the Skyline Finals will be played on Saturday, May 6.
The Skyline Champion will earn an automatic berth into field of 40 teams in the 2017 NCAA Division III National Championships later in May.
Early last week, the Skyline Conference announced the Preseason Coaches' Poll and Merchant Marine was picked to finish in sixth place in the league with 33 votes. St. Joseph's-L.I. (64 points) was the unanimous choice to finish first, Farmingdale State (57) was second, Purchase (49) third, Old Westbury (37) fourth and Mount St. Mary (36) fifth.
