KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 16, 2016) – The USMMA women's lacrosse team lost at home in a Landmark Conference contest against Scranton University, 20-4, on Saturday afternoon at Brooks Stadium. The Mariners fall to 4-4 (0-4 Landmark) in defeat, while the Lady Royals improves to 7-5 (2-1 Landmark).
The Mariners had four different goal scorers on the afternoon, starting with freshmen Jessica Reilly (Sayville, N.Y.), who tied the score at 1-1 at 28:46 of the first. Next up, freshman Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine) scored about nine minutes later to make the score 3-2 in favor of the Lady Royals.
Freshman Maura Malone (Yorktown, Va.) followed with a goal later in the first half and, lastly, sophomore Maya Lindeman (Davis, Calif.) found the back of the net with just over a minute left in the first half. Freshman goalie Hannah Gizzi (Finksburg, Md.) stopped 15 Scranton shots and led the team with three groundballs.
For the Lady Royals, junior Meghan Kerr registered a game-high six points – scoring five goals and adding one assist. Freshman Katie Rogers finished the day with four points (all goals) and senior Erin Allen also contributed four points coming from three goals and an assist. Junior Marne Rossetti earned the victory between the pipes after stopping four of the eight Mariner shots on goal.
The game started out close and was a tough battle. After the first 11 minutes, Willard's team-leading 31st goal brought the score to 3-2, Scranton. However, the Lady Royals would go on to score six of the final eight goals of the half to take a 9-4 lead into the halftime break. The second half was all Scranton, as they scored 11 goals and didn't allow one to the Mariners.
USMMA returns to action this Monday, April 18, when the Mariners travel to Morristown, N.J., for a 4 p.m. start against the College of Saint Elizabeth. If live links are available for the game, they will be posted on the USMMA women's lacrosse schedule page.
