KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 8, 2016) – The USMMA women's lacrosse team defeated future Skyline Conference rival The Sage Colleges, 13-7, in non-conference action on Friday night at Brooks Stadium. The win improves the Mariners' record to 3-2 on the season, while the Gators fall to 3-5.
Freshman Jessica Reilly (Sayville, N.Y.) tallied a new career-high in goals for the second-straight game, as she found the back of the net five times to lead Merchant Marine. Classmates Catherine Livi (Fair Lawn, N.J.) and Maura Malone (Yorktown, Va.) both chipped in with two goals and two assists apiece and fellow freshman Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine) registered two goals and one assist. Junior A Jordan Pappas (Howell, N.J.) and freshman Elizabeth Livi (Fair Lawn, N.J.) also scored for the Mariners, with Livi adding one assist.
Reilly did a little bit of everything in the game, as she also recorded four groundballs and three draw controls and led all players on the night with three caused turnovers. Pappas gathered four draw controls to tie for the game-high, while Malone scooped up five groundballs – also tying the game-high. In goal, freshman Hannah Gizzi (Finksburg, Md.) made 10 saves for her third career victory, which moves her into sole possession of first in career wins in USMMA women's lacrosse history.
The Mariners came out strong in the opening eight minutes of the game, as they found the back of the net three times. Sage responded with two quick goals to cut the home lead down to just one, 3-2, at 19:48 of the first half, but USMMA strung together six straight over the next six minutes to expand their advantage to 9-2. The teams traded two goals apiece in the final five minutes and the Mariners held an 11-4 lead into the halftime break.
The second half was quiet from a scoring standpoint, despite Sage scoring just 17 seconds into action. The Gators added another goal over 10 minutes later, but Merchant Marine answered right back exactly three minutes after at 16:34 to make the score 12-6. Both teams scored just once more in the final 10 minutes, as the Mariners held on for the win.
Sage was led by junior Monica Koralus, who scored three goals, while also tying for the game high with five groundballs and four draw controls. Senior Nicole Maher tallied two goals and sophomores Martine Ianniello and Ellen Abbott also scored for the Gators. Junior goalie Jackie St. Pierre suffered the loss between the pipes despite stopping 13 Mariner shots.
Merchant Marine is right back in action tomorrow afternoon, when they travel to New Jersey for a Landmark Conference contest against Drew University (2-9, 0-2 Landmark). Opening draw is set for 1 p.m. at Ranger Stadium on Drew's Madison, N.J., campus.
