Box Score

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 20, 2016) – On Sunday, the USMMA women's lacrosse team faced industry-rival school Maine Maritime in a "neutral-site game" at Brooks Stadium. Merchant Marine shut out Maine Maritime by the final score of 16-0 to record its first two-game win streak ever, and it's also the first time that the program has had multiple wins in a single season. USMMA improves to 2-0, while Maine Maritime falls to 0-4.

Eight different Mariners found the back of the net and nine recorded at least one point in the morning contest. Freshman Maura Malone (Yorktown, Va.) led the way with five goals, while classmate Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine) added three tallies to bring her season total to a team-best nine goals on the year. Freshman Elizabeth Livi (Fair Lawn, N.J.) dished out four assists and three more KP players registered multi-point games – freshmen Ellen Carpenter (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) (2G, 1A), Jessica Reilly (Sayville, N.Y.) (1G, 2A) and Sarah Phillips (Monterey, Calif.) (2G).

Sophomore Rebecca Bessler (Kent, Wash.) and freshmen Catherine Livi (Fair Lawn, N.J.) and Lexi Ibach (Reading, Pa.) all chipped in with one goal apiece. In goal, freshman Hannah Gizzi (Finksburg, Md.) saw only two Maine Maritime shots fired her way and only one was on goal, which Gizzi turned aside, as she record the first shutout in program history.

Gizzi also led all players in the game with six groundballs, while Reilly picked up five and Malone had four. Reilly and Malone also tied for the game-high with five draw controls each, and Reilly and Gizzi both caused three turnovers to lead the Mariners.

Merchant Marine jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening seven-plus minutes and then got into a grove in the middle third of the opening half. From 19:24 to 10:41, the Mariners found the back of the net six times to build up a 9-0 advantage. Three more tallies before the half ended gave USMMA a 12-0 lead going into the break.

The Mariners added four more goals in the second half and Gizzi made her only save of the game at 21:34 of the half.

Maine Maritime junior Morgan Maxwell led all players in the game with four caused turnovers, while seniors Haley Eckert and Mackenzie Vosburgh and freshman goalie Sierra James all tied for the team-high with three groundballs. James made eight saves between the pipes for the Mariners.
