Women’s Lacrosse Opens Season With 12-10 Victory Over Purchase

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 15, 2016) – Thanks to a strong second half, the USMMA women's lacrosse team started the 2016 season off on a good note on Tuesday night with a 12-10 victory over Purchase College at Brooks Stadium. The Mariners trailed the Panthers, 5-3, after the first 30 minutes, but outscored the visitors, 9-5, in the second half for the win.

Freshman Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine) set a new program record for goals in a game, as she found the back of the net six times set a new program record for goals in a game, as she found the back of the net six times in her first collegiate contest. Her six points on the night is also good for second place in Merchant Marine team history.

Classmate Ellen Carpenter (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) recorded a hat trick with three goals and freshmen Catherine Livi (Fair Lawn, N.J.), Jessica Reilly (Sayville, N.Y.) and Maura Malone (Yorktown, Va.) also scored in the affair.

Reilly also dished out one assist in the contest and caused a game-high three turnovers, and Malone matched the game-best with six draw controls. Freshman goalie Hannah Gizzi (Finksburg, Md.) led all players with seven groundballs, while also recording 11 saves for her first career win between the pipes.

The two teams traded the first four goals of the game before Purchase scored three of the last four in the opening half to take a 5-3 lead into the break.

The Mariners scored the first three goals of the second half to take their first lead of the night, 6-5, at 20:53. After Purchase tied the score up at 6-6 just over a minute later, USMMA responded with four straight goals and six of the next seven to open up a 12-7 lead with just 4:42 remaining. The Panthers scored three quick goals to make it interesting in the closing minutes, but the Mariners held possession for the final two-plus minutes for the victory.

Purchase was led by sophomore Emma Porter, who recorded four goals and an assist. Classmate Zoe Hines had three tallies and dished out one helper on the night. Senior Samantha Rich matched Malone's draw control total of six, while four players tied for the team lead in groundballs. In goal, sophomore Cynthia Plackis made 10 saves in the losing effort.

Up next, Merchant Marine will travel up to Purchase this coming Sunday, March 20, for a neutral-site game against Maine Maritime. Opening draw against the Mariners is scheduled for 11 a.m.
