KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 7, 2016) – On Monday, USMMA women's lacrosse head coach Kyle Simensky released the Mariners' scheduled for the upcoming 2016 season, his fourth year at the helm of the program. The 2016 campaign features 15 games, including nine home contests to be played at Brooks Stadium, five road games and one neutral site contest.
The Mariners will compete in the Landmark Conference for the final season before the program moves to the Skyline Conference ahead of the 2016-17 academic year. Six Landmark games are scheduled throughout the two-month season, while the other nine games will feature non-conference opponents, including four against future Skyline foes.
The season begins next Tuesday, March 15, when Merchant Marine welcomes the Skyline's Purchase College. The Mariners will then face Maine Maritime in a neutral site game the following Sunday, March 20 up at Purchase in Westchester County.
From there, USMMA prepares that next week for its first Landmark contest of the season down in Towson, Md., at Goucher College on Saturday, March 26. The Mariners will then return to Kings Point for three games over the next two weeks.
They'll close out March hosting Albertus Magnus on Wednesday, March 30, before hosting Landmark foe Elizabethtown on Saturday, April 2. The three-game homestand concludes with a non-conference game against future Skyline opponent Sage on Friday, April 8.
It'll be a quick turnaround for Merchant Marine, as they're set to face local Landmark foe Drew in Madison, N.J., on Saturday, April 9.
The Mariners then host cross-sound rival SUNY Maritime College in the fourth annual "Sound Shootout" on Wednesday, April 13, before a home Landmark contest against Scranton the following Saturday, April 16.
Another trip to New Jersey is up next for USMMA, as they'll take on St. Elizabeth on Monday, April 18. The Mariners defeated the Eagles, 15-1, during the 2015 campaign.
The Mariners will host two-straight home games once again as they'll welcome in first-year program Moravian College on Wednesday, April 20, and will play their last home Landmark game on Saturday, April 23, against reigning back-to-back conference champions Catholic.
It's back to the road for Merchant Marine, as they'll travel up to New London, Conn., for the Superintendents' Trophy contest against Coast Guard on Tuesday, April 26, before the 2016 home-finale and Senior Day at Brooks Stadium two days later on Thursday, April 28, against Old Westbury.
The regular season concludes on Saturday, April 30, with a road game at Landmark opponent Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pa.
The top four teams in the Landmark standings at the end of the season qualify for the Landmark Tournament. Semifinal games are scheduled for Wednesday, May 4, while the championship game will be held on Saturday, May 7. All Landmark Tournament games will be hosted by the higher seeds.
The 2016 Landmark Champions will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships, which are set to begin on Wednesday, May 11. The National Tournament will conclude in late May.
Back in February, the Mariners were picked to finish in seventh place by the Landmark head coaches in the Preseason Coaches' Poll. Simensky and the program welcome in 13 new faces to the team, as this year is the Mariners' largest recruiting class.
