Second Half Lead Slips Away; Maritime (NY) Tops USMMA, 12-10
Kings Point, NY – The USMMA women's lacrosse team saw the Maritime Privateers turn a 9-5 deficit into a 12-9 lead with seven unanswered goals over a 10-minute span in the second half to defeat the Mariners by the final of 12-10 on Monday night. Alexandra Winfree (Millstone, NY) recorded a game high five goals while Kelly Allison (Palos Verdes, CA) made 12 saves between the pipes.
The first goal of the game didn't come until over 12 minutes had passed from the opening draw. Winfree found the back of the net off a feed from Katie Noonan (Charlottesville, VA). Maritime responded with a free position goal by sophomore Leanne Lavelle but USMMA went on to score the next three goals, another by Winfree, one by Noonan and the other by A Jordan Pappas (Howell, NJ).
Sophomores Savannah Hardwick and Hannah Mutum answered with goals exactly 30 seconds apart to bring the score to 4-3. The teams traded the next two goals, as the Mariners got one from Shannen Dunn (Bourne, MA) at 2:13 and Lavelle scored her second of the game with exactly five seconds to go in the half.
USMMA came out strong after the 10-minute halftime break, scoring four of the first five goals of the half to take a 9-5 lead with 16:52 to play. The Mariner tallies in the run were split evenly between Winfree and Dunn. Lavelle and Jane Quinn started the comeback, scoring four consecutive goals one after another. Quinn broke the pattern with her second in a row and third of the game at 5:51 that gave Maritime a 10-9 lead.
Mutum scored her third goal of the night as Quinn got the assist on the tally. Then Quinn picked up her fourth of the night to round out the scoring for the Privateers with 5:08 to go. The Maritime held the Mariners to just one goal down the stretch to seal the 12-10 triumph.
