Kings Point, NY - The USMMA women's lacrosse team dropped its first game of the 2014 season, 19-5, to Wesley Sunday afternoon at Brooks Stadium. Alexandra Winfree (Millstone, NJ) led the Mariners with three goals while Shannen Dunn (Bourne, MA) and A Jordan Pappas (Howell, NJ) each added one tally. Jorden Lutz paced the Wolverines with six goals as Rylee Gould tallied 10 total points on four goals and six assists.
Wesley (1-0) opened the game on a 4-1 surge before Dunn made it 4-2 with a free position goal. The senior used a long bounced to beat the Wolverines netminder for her first career goal. USMMA was down 5-2 following a Gould 8-meter goal at the 10:39 mark of the first half.
Merchant Marine (0-1) put together a solid stretch of play late in the first half. The Mariners got back-to-back unassisted markers from Winfree and Pappas to make it a 5-4 affair with 3:17 remaining in the period. Wesley closed the half with two goals and took a 7-4 lead into the halftime intermission.
The Wolverines notched the first 10 goals of the second half to open up a comfortable margin. Rachel Smith (Broomfield, CO) made 11 saves in net for Merchant Marine while Katherine Cooke made five stops for Wesley in the victory. Pappas grabbed a team high four draw controls for USMMA while Emily Finnin (Littleton, CO) and Dunn each recorded three ground balls.
The USMMA women's lacrosse team returns to action Saturday, March 8 for a 12:00 PM home clash against Bryn Athyn.
