PURCHASE, N.Y. (Jan. 26, 2019) – In front of the USMMA Mid-Hudson Alumni Chapter cheering them on in the stands, the USMMA women's basketball team won its road, Skyline Conference game on Saturday up at Purchase College, 69-60. With the victory, the Mariners improve to 15-1 (11-1 Skyline), while the Panthers fall to 9-9 (7-6 Skyline) in defeat.
Three players scored in double-digits for the Mariners, with junior Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) leading the way with 19 points. Freshman Lauren Hunter (Tinley Park, Ill.) picked up her 12th double-double with 17 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while classmate Julia Dahlke (San Diego, Calif.) also scored 17 points, which was a career-high, thanks in part to four three-pointers.
Junior Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) contributed down low with 12 rebounds to go along with eight points, and classmate Taylor Hightower (White Plains, Md.) added six points, nine rebounds, and game-highs with four assists and three blocks.
The Panthers came out of the gates strong, scoring the first 11 points of the game and leading the Mariners 21-11 after the opening 10 minutes, and maintained a seven-point lead, 37-30, into the halftime break.
The Mariners scored the first six points of the third quarter to pull within one, but the Panthers went back ahead by seven later in the frame, 45-38, at 5:17. That's when Merchant Marine went on the game-changing run, finishing the quarter on an 11-2 run and to take their first lead of the game, 49-47, with four seconds left in the third.
The hot play continued into the final quarter, as the Mariners held Purchase to just two points over the first five and half minutes, building up a 15-point lead, 64-49, at 4:38. The Panthers made the final couple minutes interesting by going on an 11-3 run to pull within seven, 67-60, but the Mariners held on for the victory.
Senior Amber Jones scored half of Purchase's points with 30 on the day, while freshman Shadai Plowden brought down a team-high nine rebounds.
