Mariners Drop Battle Of First Place Against Mount St. Mary, 57-47

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 12, 2019) – The USMMA women's basketball team was handed its first loss of the season, 57-47, to conference undefeated Mount St. Mary in Skyline action Saturday afternoon at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The Knights move to 12-4 (9-0 Skyline) on the season while the Mariners fall to 11-1 (7-1 Skyline). 

Freshman Julia Dahlke (San Diego, Calif.) knocked down a team-high 14 points and four three-pointers on the afternoon. Junior Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) posted 12 points and dished out a team-high five assists. 

Freshman Lauren Hunter (Tinley Park, Ill.) brought down a team-high seven rebounds, while juniors Shelby Peters (El Dorado, Hills, Calif.) and Taylor Hightower (White Plains, Md.) had six rebounds apiece. 

Mount St. Mary opened up a 9-4 lead in the first quarter after both teams traded the game's first four points. After a Hightower layup at 5:36 cut the deficit down to 9-6, the Knights outscored the Mariners 9-5 the remainder of the quarter to lead 18-11 after one. 

USMMA put together a 10-4 run in the second quarter to trim the Knights' lead down to 22-21 at 4:41. Sophomore Kiana Vega (El Paso, Texas) hit a three-pointer at 1:57 that got the Mariners within one again, 28-27, but the Knights closed out the second quarter on an 8-2 run to take a 36-29 advantage into halftime. 

The Mariners would tie it twice in the third, as Dahlke hit a three-pointer at 3:16 capped off a 7-0 run to knot it up at 36 and then Hunter nailed a jump shot at 1:52 that evened it up at 39. However, Mt. St. Mary knocked down a three that kept them in front, 42-39, after three. The Knights dominated the fourth quarter, outscoring the Mariners 15-8 and going up by as many as 10 points to close it out 57-47. 

MSMC had four players score in double-figures, as sophomore Katie Smith led the way with 14 points. Freshman Lauren Desrats racked up 12 points while junior Lyndsay Pace added 11 points, and senior Kayla Cleare had 10 points. Freshman Annie Keenan hauled down a team-high eight rebounds. 

The Mariners are back at it this Tuesday, Jan. 15, when they play host to Skyline opponent Farmingdale State. Action is slated to get underway at 5:30 p.m. at Liebertz Gymnasium. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Women's Basketball Schedule Page
