Mariners Defeat Old Westbury, 49-43, At Home Tuesday Night

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 8, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team defeated Skyline opponent Old Westbury, 49-43, Tuesday evening at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The Mariners stay unbeaten at 10-0 (6-0 Skyline), while the Panthers fall to 11-2 (5-2 Skyline) with the loss. 

Freshman Lauren Hunter (Tinley Park, Ill.) recorded her ninth double-double, posting a team-high 21 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Shelby Peters (El Dorado, Hills, Calif.) dished out a team-high five assists and brought down 10 boards on the night. Classmates Taylor Hightower (White Plains, Maryland) swatted a team-high three blocks while Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y) registered 10 points and grabbed five rebounds. 

The Mariners forced 26 turnovers on the evening, including 14 in the second half. 

The Mariners used a 10-4 run late in the opening quarter to build up a 14-11 advantage after one. USMMA increased its lead to as large as seven, 22-17, on a jump shot at the 4:30 mark of the second quarter. Old Westbury scored the final four points, holding USMMA scoreless throughout the rest of the period, to trim the deficit down to 22-19 at halftime. 

The Mariners jumped out to a 10-point lead at 4:30 mark of the third, capped off by a three-point play to increase their advantage 34-24. Old Westbury used a 6-2 run to cut the lead down to six before USMMA built the lead back to nine, 39-30, to close out the third quarter. USMMA went up by as many as 13 points two times in fourth quarter, holding off an 8-1 Old Westbury run late to win 49-43. 

Seniors Monique Joseph and Charlotte Renker both posted double-doubles for the Panthers. Joseph led all scorers with 14 points and hauled in 13 rebounds. Renker brought down a team-high 16 rebounds and chipped in with 11 points. Classmate Tori Bellings dished out a team-high four assists and scored 12 points. 

Up next, the Mariners will travel out to Patchogue, Suffolk County, N.Y., this Thursday, Jan. 10, for a Skyline showdown with St. Joseph's-Long Island.
