Lauren Hunter Dominates In 74-65 Road Win At Hunter On Tuesday

NEW YORK (Nov. 27, 2018) – The USMMA women's basketball team used an incredible effort by freshman Lauren Hunter (Tinley Park, Ill.) to defeat, of all schools, Hunter College, 74-65, in non-conference action on the road Tuesday evening in Manhattan. The victory improves the Mariners to 2-0 on the year, while the Hawks fall to 1-4 with the loss. 

Hunter recorded her second-straight double-double to start the season, as she led all players with 37 points, while also grabbing down 14 rebounds, dishing out four assists and swiping three steals. The rookie shot 15-for-19 on the night. 

Junior Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y) added 15 points and five assists in the contest, while classmate Taylor Hightower (White Plains, Md.) led all players with 15 rebounds and seven assists to go along with nine points. Junior Shelby Peters (El Dorado, Hills, Calif.) brought down 11 boards on the night and, like Hightower, just missed out on a double-double with nine points. 

After a back-and-forth first quarter, USMMA finished on a 7-0 run to lead, 15-9. The Mariners jumped out to a 19-11 lead in the second quarter, after a Hunter layup at the seven-minute mark. The Hawks would go back in front, 22-21, with 5:02 to go, after an 11-2 run. After trading the lead seven more times over the next five minutes, the Mariners used another 7-0 run to go up 34-28 at halftime. 

The Hawks opened the third quarter on an 11-6 run to get within one point, 40-39, with 6:50 remaining. The Mariners countered with an 11-3 run, to go ahead 59-47, after three quarters of play.  The USMMA grew to as much as 16 points, 65-49, with 7:13 remaining. The Hawks fought back to get within six, 69-63, with 1:49 to play, but the Mariners were able to hold the Hawks off in the final minutes. 

Junior Janine Conway led the Hawks with 23 points and five rebounds, while senior Jade Aponte chipped in with 16 points. Juniors Theresa Leung and Phoebe Valenton added a combine 17 points on the night. 

Up next, Merchant Marine will travel up to Bronxville, N.Y., this Thursday night, Nov. 29, for a Skyline Conference contest at Sarah Lawrence College.
