NEWBURGH, N.Y. (Feb. 10, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team lost its Skyline Conference road matchup up at Mount St. Mary, 58-46, on Saturday afternoon at the Knights' Kaplan Center Gymnasium. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 15-7 (11-5 Skyline), while first-place MSMC improves to 18-5 (15-1 Skyline).
Sophomore Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) recorded a double-double for USMMA as she led all players in the game with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Senior Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) added 10 points, while classmate Gabrielle Salazar (Memphis, Tenn.) drained eight. Off the bench, freshman Kiana Vega (El Paso, Texas) contributed seven points.
The Mariners led for most of the first quarter before the hosts took a one-point lead at 1:39 and the Knights went on to hold a 13-9 advantage when the buzzer sounded ending the opening period. Mount St. Mary's lead hit as high as seven points twice early in the second quarter, including at 7:29 when the Knights led 18-11. However, Merchant Marine finished the second on a 7-2 run and trailed by just two, 20-18, at halftime.
USMMA briefly went ahead early in the third and the two teams swapped leads a total of six times in the frame, but it was the Knights that finished strong on a 9-2 run to take a 36-30 advantage into the fourth quarter. After three-plus minutes passed in the fourth, the hosts' lead hit double-figures for the first time on the day and it remained in double digits the rest of the game.
For Mount St. Mary, senior Janae Graham had a team-best 11 points, while junior Elizabeth Limonta brought down 12 rebounds to lead the Knights to go along with eight points. Senior Jessica Rini had a solid day with eight points and six boards and junior Kayla Cleare contributed 11 rebounds in the victory.
The Mariners hit the hardwood next this coming Tuesday, Feb. 13, when they play host to Skyline opponent St. Joseph's of Long Island in the regular season home-finale at the Liebertz Gymnasium.
