KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Feb. 7, 2018) – The USMMA women's basketball team defeated visiting Sarah Lawrence College, 88-23, on Wednesday night in Skyline Conference action at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The victory ties the program record for wins in a season, as the Mariners improve to 15-6 overall (11-4 Skyline), while the Gryphons fall to 1-18 (0-14 Skyline) in defeat.
Four players scored in double-figures for Merchant Marine, with freshman Kiana Vega (El Paso, Texas) leading the way with a game-high 25 points off the bench. The rookie just missed out a double-double, as she dished out seven assists in the game to go along with four steals. Sophomore Taylor Hightower (White Plains, Md.) did record a double-double with 12 points and a game-best 20 rebounds, while also posting five blocks, four assists and four steals.
Senior Gabrielle Salazar (Memphis, Tenn.) added 13 points and sophomore Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) had 12. Senior Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) contributed eight points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) had nine points and six boards. Off the bench, freshman Kathryn Kelley (Quantico, Va.) scored six points and brought down seven rebounds, while classmate Alina Montenegro (West Palm Beach, Fla.) had three points and three boards.
The Mariners led from start-to-finish, building up a 32-3 lead after the first quarter and a 53-11 advantage at halftime. USMMA went ahead 70-13 after the third and sailed on to the 88-23 win.
For the Gryphons, freshman Alexa Zartman-Ball and junior Emmamazy Prior both scored a team-best eight points, with Zartman-Ball also bringing downs a team-high seven rebounds. Junior Taryn Penna contributed six points, six boards, three steals, two assists and two blocks on the night.
The Mariners return to action this Saturday, Feb. 10, when they travel up to Newburgh, N.Y. to take on first-place Mount St. Mary beginning at 1 p.m. at the Knights' Kaplan Center. Live stats of the game will be available at this link.
