BRONXVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 8, 2018) – Four players scored in double-digits to propel the USMMA women's basketball team to a 79-44 road Skyline victory over Sarah Lawrence on Monday night up in Westchester County. With the win, the Mariners improve to 9-3 (5-2 Skyline), while the Gryphons fall to 1-9 (0-6 Skyline).
Sophomore Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) and senior Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) both recorded double-doubles, as they both tied for the game-high with 16 points with Peters leading all players with a career-high 18 rebounds and three blocks and Carmon bringing down 10 boards. Freshman Kiana Vega (El Paso, Texas) added 16 points, six assists and a game-high six steals and senior Gabrielle Salazar (Memphis, Tenn.) drained a season-best 14 points to go along with six assists and four steals.
Off the bench, freshman Kathryn Kelley (Quantico, Va.) scored a career-high eight points with three rebounds and sophomore Taylor Hightower (White Plains, Md.) contributed three points and 13 boards. Sophomore Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) rounded out the Mariner scorers with seven points.
USMMA led from start to finish, building up a lead as high as 19 points in the first half, 29-10 at 1:48 of the second quarter, before taking a 30-14 lead into the halftime break. The advantage hit 31 points, 50-19, at 2:46 of the third and only dipped below 30 points once briefly in the latter part of the third/early part of the fourth.
For Sarah Lawrence, three different players scored a team-high 10 points apiece – junior Taryn Penna and freshmen Alexa Zartman-Ball and freshman Tess Carrier. Zartman-Ball led the team with eight rebounds, while Penna added seven rebounds and a game-high eight assists.
