OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Dec. 5, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team was defeated on the road by undefeated Old Westbury, 64-51, on Tuesday night in Skyline Conference action at the Panthers' Clark Athletic Center. With the loss, the Mariners fall to 3-2 (2-1 Skyline), while OW improves to 6-0 (4-0 Skyline).
USMMA was led by senior Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.), who drained a game-high 18 points, while also recording six rebounds and three assists. Freshman Kiana Vega (El Paso, Texas) had the first double-digit scoring effort of her career, as she contributed 12 points and tied for the game-high with four assists.
Sophomore Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) chipped in with nine points and four boards and tied for the game-high with four steals to go along with three dimes. Classmate Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) registered four points and a team-best eight rebounds and fellow sophomore Taylor Hightower (White Plains, Md.) had six points and six boards off the bench. Senior Gabrielle Salazar (Memphis, Tenn.) rounded out the Mariners' scoring with two points and also recorded two boards and three steals.
The Mariners had a five-point lead, 19-14, after a back-and-forth opening quarter. They expanded their advantage to a game-high seven points with the first basket of the second and held the lead the entire frame despite the Panthers fighting all the way back to within one, 27-26, right before the halftime break.
Old Westbury took the lead with a layup in the first minute of the third quarter and worked up a six-point lead, 37-31, through five-plus minutes of the stanza. The Mariners scored six-straight points to tie the score up at 37 at 2:45, but the Panthers went back ahead and held a two-point lead into the fourth, 44-42.
The hosts scored seven-straight to open the final quarter to take a 51-42 lead. Merchant Marine fought back to within four points at 2:16, 55-51, but the Panthers finished the game on a 9-0 run to claim the victory.
Old Westbury had three players score in double-figures, as junior Monique Joseph led the way with 14 points to go along with nine rebounds. Senior Destiny Marino and junior Tori Bellings both added 11 points each and junior Charlotte Renker led all players in the game with 13 rebounds. Freshman Alessia Drevnyak had a strong game off the bench with nine points and nine boards.
The Mariners return to action this Sunday, Dec. 10, with a non-conference home contest against Medgar Evers as part of a doubleheader with the men's team at the Liebertz Gymnasium.
