BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Nov. 30, 2017) – The USMMA women's basketball team defeated Skyline Conference opponent St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn, 61-59, on Thursday night at the Bears' Hill Center. In victory, the Mariners halted St. Joe's three-game winning streak and improve to 2-1 (2-0 Skyline), while the Bears fall to 3-3 (1-1 Skyline).
Merchant Marine's lead was as high as 17 points, 49-32, late in the third quarter, but SJC fought all the way back to just one point, 58-57, in the final minute of regulation after a strong fourth. The Mariners held on for the two-point win after both teams traded baskets and sophomore Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) nailed a free throw to close out the scoring.
Two players recorded double-doubles for the Mariners – senior Tichina Carmon (Greenvile, N.C.) had her second-straight with a game-high 18 points to go along with 10 rebounds and sophomore Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) scored 10 points and led all players on the night with 17 boards and four steals.
D'Arcy finished with 15 points and six rebounds, freshman Kiana Vega (El Paso, Texas) added nine points, senior Gabrielle Salazar (Memphis, Tenn.) contributed five points and tied for the game-high with four assists and sophomore Taylor Hightower (White Plains, N.Y.) chipped in with four points and six rebounds.
For St. Joseph's, freshman Kelly O'Donnell registered a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while junior Victoria Porcasi drained 11 points. Classmate Caitlyn Staab brought down a team-best 15 rebounds on the night.
A home, non-conference contest against Berkeley College is up next for the Mariners this Saturday, Dec. 2. Tipoff against the Knights is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium.
