KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 14, 2017) – The Skyline Conference announced last week that the USMMA Women's Basketball team was picked by the league's head coaches to finish this upcoming 2017-18 season in fifth place. The Mariners earned 56 points and one first-place vote in the 2017-18 Skyline Conference Women's Basketball Preseason Coaches' Poll.
Old Westbury was the preseason favorite, earning five first-place votes and a total of 72 points. Mount St. Mary came in second with 68 points and one first-place vote, while Farmingdale State (67pts, two FPV) and Mount St. Vincent (58pts, one FPV) were third and fourth, respectively.

Additionally, the entire 2017-18 USMMA Women's Basketball schedule is available to view on www.USMMASports.com. The Mariners, under 10th-year head coach Matt Dempsey, begin the new campaign exactly one week from today, Tuesday, Nov. 21, at home against Hunter College.
The 2017-18 slate features a total of 24 contests, with 18 against the other nine Skyline Conference opponents. The Mariners will play 13 games in the friendly confines of the Liebertz Gymnasium, including a season-long six-game homestand ranging from late January into early February.
Merchant Marine will host non-conference Hunter College (Nov. 21), Berkeley (Dec. 2), Medgar Evers (Dec. 10), and arch-rival Coast Guard (Jan. 24), and will hit the road to face York (N.Y.) (Dec. 16) and New Rochelle (Dec. 18).
Conference home-and-home matchups will play out like this – Purchase (home on Nov. 28, away on Jan. 16), St. Joseph's-Brooklyn (away on Nov. 30, home on Jan. 27), Old Westbury (away on Dec. 5, home on Jan. 18), Yeshiva (away on Dec. 12, home on Jan. 30), Mount St. Vincent (away on Dec. 14, home on Feb. 3), Sarah Lawrence (away on Jan. 3, home on Feb. 7), Mount St. Mary (home on Jan. 6, away on Feb. 10), St. Joseph's-Long Island (away on Jan. 10, home on Feb. 13) and Farmingdale State (home on Jan. 13, away in the regular season-finale on Feb. 17).
This season will also see the Mariners' play at home as part of doubleheaders with the men's basketball team a total of seven times – three mid-week doubleheaders and four on weekends – on Tuesday, Nov. 21; Sunday, Dec. 10; Saturday, Jan. 6; Saturday, Jan.13; Wednesday, Jan. 24; Tuesday, Jan. 30 and Saturday, Feb. 3.
The 2018 Skyline Conference Tournament begins with first round games (#6 seed at #3 seed and #5 seed at #4 seed) on Tuesday, Feb. 20. The winners will move on to face the top two seeds in the semifinals on Thursday, Feb. 22 and the Skyline Championship game will be played on Saturday, Feb. 24. The winner of the Skyline title will earn the conference's automatic bid into the 2018 NCAA DIII Tournament, which will begin the first week of March 2018.
All 2017-18 home games will feature live stats and live video streams on the USMMA Sports Network. Weekend games will feature play-by-play by John Kelly Jr., who is returning for his fifth season on the call of Mariner basketball.
