NEWBURGH, N.Y. (Feb. 14, 2017) – Despite a strong fourth quarter, the USMMA women's basketball team lost its Skyline Conference road contest at Mount St. Mary on Tuesday night, 55-48, up at the Knights' Kaplan Center. The defeat drops the Mariners to 11-12 overall (7-10 Skyline), while the first place Knights improves to 18-5 (14-3 Skyline).
Freshman Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) tied for the game-high with 12 points, while also bringing down six rebounds and tying for the team-best with three assists and two steals. Juniors Gabrielle Salazar (Memphis, Tenn.) and Sarah Milafsky (Aurora, Colo.) both added six points apiece and senior Allie Drake (Centereach, N.Y.) recorded a team-high eight rebounds.
The Mariners trailed by 27 at halftime, 39-12, and by as many as 22 early in the fourth quarter before finishing strong in the final frame. With the score 51-29 at 9:39 of the fourth, Merchant Marine fought all the way back to within just eight points at 2:47 after a 16-2 run made the score 53-45. However it was too-little-too-late, as the Knights held on for the home victory.
Mount St. Mary was led by sophomore Kayla Cleare, who tied D'Arcy for the game-high with 12 points. Junior Jessica Rini added 11 points, while freshman Lyndsay Pace and junior Janae Graham contributed eight each. Cleare finished the night with a double-double, as she also led all players in the game with 10 rebounds.
The Mariners close out the regular season this Saturday afternoon, Feb. 18, when they host St. Joseph's of Long Island in Skyline Conference action. Prior to the 1 p.m. tip at the Liebertz Gymnasium, the women's basketball program will pay tribute to its four graduating seniors – Drake, Kelsey Hofmann (Adel, Iowa), Rachel Wehlburg (Herndon, Va.) and Jordy Macbeth (Orlando, Fla.) – with a special Senior Day ceremony.
