Mariners Fall To Coast Guard, 51-45, Sunday On The Road

NEW LONDON, Conn. (Feb. 12, 2017) – The USMMA women's basketball team lost its final non-conference game of the season at arch-rival Coast Guard, 51-45, on Sunday at the Bears' Roland Hall. The Mariners' record falls to an even 11-11, while the Bears improve to 9-14.
 
Freshman Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) led Merchant Marine with 10 points and was one of four players with a team-high five rebounds to go with a team-best four steals. Senior Rachel Wehlburg (Herndon, Va.) added nine points and classmate Allie Drake (Centereach, N.Y.) contributed eight off the bench.
 
The Mariners held a 28-15 lead at halftime and had an advantage as high as 15 points, 30-15, very early in the third quarter.
 
The Bears went on two long runs in the second half, however, as the hosts rattled off an 11-0 run that made the score 30-26 in favor of Merchant Marine at 3:57 of the third. Then, after USMMA held a 35-28 advantage late in the third, Coast Guard took their first lead since early in the game after an 18-6 run made it 46-41 Bears with just 1:24 left in the fourth.
 
The two teams traded three-pointers over the next minute of play and the Mariners were unable to overcome the late deficit.
 
Junior Gill Gerton registered a double-double for Coast Guard with 11 points and a game-high 19 rebounds. Freshman Zoe Riis-Fallica drained a team-high 13 points and junior Jill Bray added nine off the bench.
 
The Mariners return to action this Tuesday night, Feb. 14, when they travel up to Newburgh, N.Y., to take on Mount St. Mary in a Skyline Conference showdown. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Knights' Kaplan Gymnasium. Live stats are available for the contest by following this link.
