KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Feb. 8, 2017) – The USMMA women's basketball team lost a tough one on Wednesday night to visiting Mount St. Vincent, 58-54, in Skyline Conference action at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The defeat drops the Mariners' record to 11-9 (7-8 Skyline) on the season, while the Dolphins improve to 14-7 (10-4 Skyline).
Freshman Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) recorded a double-double for Merchant Marine, tying for the team-high with 14 points and leading all players in the game with 11 rebounds. Senior Rachel Wehlburg (Herndon, Va.) also scored 14 for the Mariners in the losing effort. Freshman Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) and junior Gabrielle Salazar (Memphis, Tenn.) contributed nine and eight points, respectively, while freshman Taylor Hightower (White Plains, Md.) added seven off the bench.
After falling behind 6-0 on back-to-back Dolphin three-pointers, USMMA exploded for 13-straight points for a 13-6 lead halfway through the first quarter. The Mariners held the lead the remainder of the opening frame, ending on a buzzer-beater by Hightower that gave them a 20-13 advantage.
The first points of the second quarter weren't scored until 4:14 of the stanza on a three-point play by CMSV that made it a four-point game. The Dolphins went on to outscore Merchant Marine, 14-5, in the second to take a slim 27-25 lead in the exciting affair.
Play was so close in the third quarter that the score was tied on nine separate occasions throughout and the two teams exchanged leads six times. A pair of free-throws with just two seconds on the clock gave Mount St. Vincent a 44-43 lead going into the final quarter.
In the fourth, the Dolphins found themselves up by one once again, 50-49, at 5:43, but the Mariners answered with four straight, all by Peters, to take a 53-50 lead at 3:56. After neither team scored for over two minutes, CMSV rattled off an 8-1 run down the stretch to seal the victory.
The Dolphins were led by senior Christina Barone, who scored a game-high 19 points. Barone also recorded a team-best five rebounds. Junior Kristen Merrell added 11 points and led all players in the contest with five steals.
