KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Feb. 5, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team downed visiting Yeshiva University, 58-43, on Sunday at the Liebertz Gymnasium in Skyline Conference action. The win improves the Mariners' record to 11-8 (7-7 Skyline), while the Maccabees fall to 2-16 (0-13 Skyline) in defeat.
Freshman Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) recorded a double-double for USMMA with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Peters tied for the team-high in points with junior Gabrielle Salazar (Memphis, Tenn.) and senior Rachel Wehlburg (Herndon, Va.), while also tying for the game-high in rebounds with fellow freshman Taylor Hightower (White Plains, N.Y.) and Yeshiva senior Gavriela Colton.
Freshman Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) added eight points and Hightower contributed seven off the bench. Salazar led all players in the game with four steals.
The Mariners scored the first 11 points of the game and charged out to a 21-6 lead by the end of the first quarter. The advantaged reached 17 points early in the second, but Yeshiva responded late in the frame by cutting its deficit down to just eight points, 32-24, at 1:22 after a 18-9 run. Merchant Marine scored the final four points of the quarter to go into the locker room with a 36-24 lead.
The USMMA lead didn't fall under 10 points the entirety of the second half, as the Mariners' largest lead of the day came at 1:38 of the third quarter, when they Wehlburg hit a layup to make the score, 48-26.
Three players scored a game-high 12 points each for Yeshiva – senior Tess Blaustein, junior Michal Alge and sophomore Avigayil Wiener. Alge had a double-double, as she also brought down 10 rebounds. Colton led the team and tied for the game-best with 11 rebounds.
The Mariners' four-game homestand continues on Wednesday night, Feb. 8, when they play host to Skyline opponent Mount St. Vincent. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium.
