KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Feb. 2, 2017) – On Thursday night, the USMMA women's basketball team defeated visiting St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn, 57-40, in an important Skyline Conference showdown to begin the final month of the regular season. With the victory, the Mariners improve to 10-8 (6-7 Skyline) and remain in sixth place in the league - the final playoff spot – while the Bears fall to 6-13 (4-8 Skyline) in defeat.

Senior Kelsey Hofmann (Adel, Iowa) led all players in the game with a career-high 18 points and was just one rebound shy of a double-double, as she grabbed down nine boards. Freshman Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) was also short of a double-double with a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with eight points. Both juniors Gabrielle Salazar (Memphis, Tenn.) and Myckenzie Toler (Prunedale, Calif.) chipped in off the bench with nine and seven points, respectively.

Freshman Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) recorded game-highs with five assists and three steals (tied for game-high), while matching the team-best of two blocks with Peters and senior Allie Drake (Centereach, Calif.).

The opening quarter was close, as the Mariners fell behind after an early three-pointer by St. Joe's, but grabbed the lead at 6:51 on a layup by Peters that made it 4-3. The USMMA advantage reached as high as four points on numerous occasions over the opening 10 minutes, including the end of the quarter, where the Mariners led, 18-14.

Merchant Marine took advantage of some poor shooting by the visitors in the second quarter, as the Bears hit only one field goal and were 1-for-14 from the floor. The Mariners outscored St. Joe's 18-6 in the quarter to take a 36-20 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The USMMA advantage hit a high of 22 points, 44-22, late in the third quarter and it did not drop below 15 points the remainder of the game, as the Mariners cruised on to the 17-point victory.

Leading the way for the Bears was sophomore Victoria Porcasi, who drained 13 points, while junior Destiny Marino added 10. Senior Kristen Candelaria and freshman Lauren Quesada both brought down a team-high six rebounds.

Up next, the Mariners will host Skyline opponent Yeshiva University this Sunday, Feb. 5, beginning at 12-noon at the Liebertz Gymnasium. Live stats and a live video stream of the contest are available with links on the USMMA Women's Basketball Schedule Page.
