KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 25, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team lost its Skyline Conference home contest to visiting Old Westbury, 55-43, on Wednesday night at the Liebertz Gymnasium. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 8-7 (4-6 Skyline), while the Panthers improve to 13-3 (6-3 Skyline) with the win.

Freshman Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) drained a game-high 18 points, 11 of which came in the fourth quarter. She also had eight boards and three steals. Classmate Taylor Hightower (White Plains, Md.) contributed nine points with six rebounds, and fellow freshman Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) scored eight to go along with a game-best nine rebounds.

Both teams struggled in the first half, but the Mariners were held to just 11 points after the opening 20 minutes, as Old Westbury went into the locker room up 27-11.

The Panthers outscored USMMA 17-6 in the third quarter to expand their lead to 44-17.

Merchant Marine would not go quietly, however, as the Mariners played strong in the fourth quarter and wound up outscoring OW, 26-11, but it was too-little-too-late, as the visitors held on for the important Skyline victory.

Up next, Merchant Marine travels up to Purchase this Saturday, Jan. 28, for a Skyline showdown with the Panthers. Game time is set for 12-noon at the Purchase College Gymnasium. Live stats will be available for the contest by following this link.
