PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (Jan. 17, 2017) – St. Joseph's of Long Island hit a pair of free throws with just five seconds remaining to claim a 56-55 victory over the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team on Tuesday night at the Golden Eagles' Danzi Athletic Center. The Mariners fall to 8-6 (4-5 Skyline) on the season with the loss, while SJC improves to 5-11 (4-6 Skyline).
Freshman Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) drained a team-high 15 points for the Mariners to go along with a game-high four blocks, while junior Samantha Drake (Centereach, N.Y.) added 10 off the bench. Freshman Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) contributed nine points and a team-best nine rebounds in the losing effort.
The Mariners held the lead for a majority of the affair, as their advantage reached as high as 15 points, 29-14, late in the second quarter, and they took a 29-18 lead into the locker room at halftime.
St. Joseph's came out strong to start the third quarter, cutting its deficit down to just two points, 31-29, at 3:42 after an 11-2 run. USMMA rebounded and finished the quarter with a 41-35 lead.
After the Mariners held the advantage for over half of the final quarter, SJC took its first lead since very early in the contest at 3:49, when a layup made the score 47-46. Merchant Marine quickly jumped back in front just 13 seconds later and held the advantage for nearly three minutes until the St. Joe's tied the score at 53-53 with 43 seconds remaining.
The Golden Eagles made one-of-two free throws at 33 seconds and the Mariners responded with a layup by senior Kelsey Hofmann (Adel, Iowa) with just 10 seconds remaining to take the one-point lead. However, a foul on St. Joseph's next possession put the Golden Eagles at the line for two with five ticks left and junior Andrea Iavarone nailed both free throws to put the hosts back ahead. USMMA was unable to respond on their final possession.
Iavarone led all players in the game with a double-double, registered 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Golden Eagles. Sophomore Alicia Indence chipped in with 18 points and freshman Juliana Cintron-Leonardo brought down eight rebounds.
The Mariners have this coming weekend off from competition, but will prepare for their Superintendents' Trophy matchup against arch-rival Coast Guard next Monday night, Jan. 23, up in New London, Conn. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Bears' Roland Hall. Live stats for the contest will be available by clicking here.
