KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 14, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team lost its Skyline Conference contest to Mount St. Mary on Saturday afternoon, 50-38, at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The Mariners' record drops to 8-5 (4-4 Skyline) on the season, while the first-place Knights improve to 11-3 (7-1 Skyline).
Senior Rachel Wehlburg (Herndon, Va.) led USMMA with 10 points for her fourth double-digit scoring effort of the season and second in the last three games. Her 10 points tied the game-high. Freshman Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) brought down nine rebounds, which also matched the contest-best. Juniors Sarah Milafsky (Aurora, Colo.) and Samantha Drake (Centereach, N.Y.) both added six points off the bench, while Drake and freshman Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) contributed seven boards apiece.
The two teams exchanged early leads until the Knights scored 10 straight points in the final five minutes of the first quarter to take a 17-9 advantage. The Mariners slowly chipped away at the deficit in the second quarter and brought it to a one-point affair, 26-25, with 21 seconds remaining, but MSMC ended the half with a layup to take the 28-25 lead into the locker room at halftime.
In the third, the visitors jumped ahead by as many as nine points, 37-29, at 2:24. USMMA responded with seven-straight points into the start of the fourth, and then again cut the Knights' lead down to just one at 5:41, 38-37. However, Mount St. Mary pulled away down the stretch by holding the Mariners without a field goal in the final five minutes and ending the game on a 12-1 run.
Freshman Jordyn Hellpap matched Wehlburg with a game-high 10 points for the Knights, while sophomore Kayla Cleare and junior Jessica Rini both tied D'Arcy for the contest-best of nine rebounds.
This coming Tuesday, Jan. 17, the Mariners will travel out to Patchogue, N.Y. in Suffolk County for a Skyline affair at St. Joseph's of Long Island. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Golden Eagles' Danzi Athletic Center. Live stats for the contest will be available at this link.
