BRONX, N.Y. (Jan. 7, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team lost its first game in over a month on Saturday, dropping a Skyline Conference tilt at the College of Mount St. Vincent, 62-51, at the Dolphins' Peter Jay Sharp Center. The loss drops the Mariners' record to 8-3 (4-2 Skyline), while CMSV improves to 9-5 (5-2 Skyline) after their fifth-straight victory.
Freshman Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) led all players in the game with 17 points and also tied for the team-high with eight rebounds. Senior Rachel Wehlburg (Herndon, Va.) added 12 points with eight boards and freshman Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) also had eight rebounds to go along with seven points.
Neither team scored in the opening two minutes of the game until Mount St. Vincent drained a three at 7:53. The Mariners kept the game close in the first quarter, but the Dolphins would not relinquish the lead the remainder of the game. CMSV finished the first with a 17-11 advantage.
The hosts' lead hit double-digits, 21-11, early in the second quarter, but USMMA fought back to within four points at 26-22 at 3:46. However, the Dolphins finished the half on a 14-4 run and took a 40-26 lead into the halftime break.
Mount St. Vincent's lead didn't drop below double-digits for the rest of the afternoon, as they reached their largest lead of 19 points, 49-30, at 4:32 of the third quarter.
Two players scored in double-figures for the Dolphins, with senior Christina Barone leading the way with 15 points and classmate Brittany Carroll chipping in with 10. Freshman Dez Brown brought down a game-high nine rebounds
The Mariners return to action on Wednesday night, Jan. 11, when they travel up to Albany, N.Y., to face Skyline Conference opponent Sage. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the Gators' Kahl Gymnasium.
