JAMAICA, N.Y. (Dec. 17, 2016) – On Saturday afternoon, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team made program history by notching its seventh-straight victory, a 77-44 road win over York College in non-conference action. The Mariners' record improves to 8-2 overall, while the Cardinals fall to 1-9.

No Mariner team had ever won more than six straight games – or started the year with an 8-2 record – in the previous 16 seasons prior to this year.

Freshman Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) led all players in the game with 14 points and was one of three Mariners to notch double-figures, as junior Samantha Drake (Centereach, N.Y.) added 14 and freshman Taylor Hightower (White Plains, Md.) contributed a career-best 12, both off the bench.

Drake recorded a double-double, as she brought down a game-high 14 rebounds, and Hightower just missed out on one, as she had nine boards. Freshman Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) also added nine rebounds, while also scoring four points.

Senior Kelsey Hofmann (Adel, Iowa) chipped in with eight points, junior Gabrielle Salazar (Memphis, Tenn.) had seven points off the bench, senior Rachel Wehlburg (Herndon, Va.) added six and classmate Allie Drake (Centereach, N.Y.) and junior Myckenzie Toler (Prunedale, Calif.) rounded out the Mariner scorers with four and three points, respectively.

USMMA had control from the get-go in this game, as they quickly built up a double-digit lead in the first four-plus minutes. They started action with a 15-2 run and outscored York, 26-8, in the first quarter. The Mariners built their lead up to 20 by the end of the second, 41-21.

Merchant Marine spent the entire third quarter with a 20-plus point lead and the entire fourth quarter with a 30-plus point advantage, with the Mariners' largest lead of the game, 41 points, coming at 6:50 of the last frame, 70-29.

For the host Cardinals, junior Evanda Redwood scored a team-best 14 points and classmate Giovana Rosado notched 11 points off the bench. Freshman Diamond Jackson led York with seven rebounds.

The Mariners will look to extend the program-best win-streak to eight when they open up action in the New Year on Saturday, Jan. 7, with a road Skyline game at Mount St. Vincent in the Bronx. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Dolphins' Peter Jay Sharp Center. Live stats and a live video stream of the contest will be available with links on the USMMA Women's Basketball Schedule Page.
