Box Score

NEW YORK (Dec. 15, 2016) – Only once before had the USMMA women's basketball program won six straight games and that was during the 2003-04 season, its fifth season ever (fourth in the NCAA). The Mariners defeated Yeshiva on the road, 71-37, in Skyline Conference action on Thursday night to tie the program record for consecutive victories.

Merchant Marine improves to 7-2 (4-1 Skyline) on the year, while the Maccabees fall to 2-8 (0-7 Skyline).

Three Mariners scored in double-figures, as freshman Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) and junior Samantha Drake (Centereach, N.Y.) led the way with 12 points apiece. Peters was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field and also recorded a double-double as she brought down a game-high 10 rebounds. Junior Sarah Milafsky (Aurora, Colo.) contributed 10 points off the bench.

Senior Rachel Wehlburg (Herndon, Va.) and junior Myckenzie Toler (Prunedale, Calif.) added eight points each, while freshman Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) had six. Three Mariners scored four points apiece – seniors Allie Drake (Centereach, N.Y.) and Jordy Macbeth (Orlando, Fla.) and junior Gabrielle Salazar (Memphis, Tenn.) – and freshman Taylor Hightower (White Plains, Md.) rounded out the USMMA scorers with three points. Salazar led all players in the game with four assists, while Hightower registered a game-high five steals.

The Mariners built up a double-digit lead just under seven minutes into action and their advantage never fell below 10 the rest of the way. After earning a 22-8 lead through one quarter, the USMMA defense allowed just five points in the second quarter and the Mariners went into the locker room at halftime with a 42-13 advantage.

It was much of the same in the second half, as the Merchant Marine lead only fell below 30 points on two separate occasions, and the Mariners sailed on to the 34-point victory.

For Yeshiva, senior Tess Blaustein scored a game-high 17 points and she and three other Maccabees recorded a team-best eight rebounds. Blaustein also led all players on the night with four blocks.

The Mariners will close out the 2016 portion of their schedule this Saturday, Dec. 17, when they travel to nearby Jamaica, Queens, to take on York College in non-conference action. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Cardinals' York College Gym. Live stats of the contest will be available at this link.
