KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Dec. 13, 2016) – On Tuesday night, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team defeated visiting non-conference opponent New Rochelle, 65-23, at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The win, which was the Mariners' fifth straight, improves their record to 6-2, while the Blue Angels fall to 5-3 in defeat.
USMMA did a great job of spreading the ball around, as 10 different players got on the scoresheet in the game. Junior Myckenzie Toler (Prunedale, Calif.) led the way with nine points, while four Mariners scored eight points apiece – seniors Rachel Wehlburg (Herndon, Va.) and Jordy Macbeth (Orlando, Fla.), junior Samantha Drake (Centereach, N.Y.) and freshman Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.).
On the glass, Drake brought down a game- and career-high 16 rebounds, while freshman Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) registered 12 boards and Macbeth had nine.
Merchant Marine held New Rochelle to just 13.5-percent shooting from the field (7-for-52). The Mariners started the night with a 15-0 run and ended the first quarter up 22-3. The lead stayed over 20 points the entire second quarter, as USMMA went into the locker room with a 37-11 advantage at halftime.
The third quarter featured just 11 points scored, as Merchant Marine outscored the CNR, 8-3. The Blue Angels had their best frame in the fourth when they put together nine points, but the Mariner lead was too big to overcome.
Sophomore Aaliyah Fields led the way with 12 points for New Rochelle, while junior Chelsea Thomas added six. Junior Caitlin Harrison brought down a team-high four rebounds.
The Mariners will travel into Manhattan this coming Thursday night, Dec. 15, for a Skyline showdown with Yeshiva University. The game, which is set to begin at 7 p.m., will be played at Baruch College. Live stats of the contest will be available at this link.
