BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Dec. 6, 2016) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team picked up its second straight Skyline victory on Tuesday night on the road at St. Joseph's of Brooklyn, 56-43. With the win, the Mariners improve to 3-2 (2-1 Skyline), while the Bears fall to 2-5 (1-2 Skyline).
Four Mariners recorded double-digits in scoring, led by freshman Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) who had 12 points, while classmate Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) notched a new career-high with 11 points. Senior Kelsey Hofmann (Adel, Iowa) registered 10 points and a team-best eight rebounds to go along with a game-high seven assists and five steals and junior Gabrielle Salazar (Memphis, Tenn.) added a season-high 10 points off the bench.
After falling behind 6-3 over the opening two and a half minutes, USMMA finished the rest of the first quarter on a 15-2 run, including a 9-0 run in the final four minutes take an 18-8 lead. The Mariners held the Bears to just three field goals in the opening quarter on 23.1-percent shooting (3-for-13). Salazar led Merchant Marine with five points in the first 10 minutes on a perfect 2-for-2 from the field and 1-for-1 at the free-throw line. The Mariners shot 50-percent (9-for-18) as a team.
The second quarter saw SJC-Brooklyn fight back strong, as they quickly cut the USMMA lead down to four, 22-18, just under four minutes in. The Bears outscored the Mariners 14-8 in the second, but the Mariners still led, 26-22, into the halftime break.
Merchant Marine began to distance itself in the third quarter, as the Mariners wasted little time to build their lead back up to double-digits by hitting the first three field goals in the opening three minutes. That was all part of a 12-0 run to start the third, as St. Joe's was held scoreless for nearly seven minutes, hitting its first basket at 3:14. USMMA finished the quarter with a commanding 16-point lead, 45-29.
In the fourth, the Bears tried hard to come back, but never got closer than 11 points, as the Mariners kept the hosts at bay and sailed on to the 13-point victory.
Junior Destiny Marino led all players in the game with 18 points to go along with eight rebounds for St. Joseph's, while sophomore Caitlyn Staab contributed 12 points in the losing effort. Freshman Lauren Quesada brought down a game-high nine boards coming in off the bench.
The Mariners are back in action this Thursday night, Dec. 8, when they return to Brooklyn to face non-conference opponent Medgar Evers College. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at MEC's Cougars Cave.
