D’Arcy’s Double-Double Propels Mariners Past Purchase, 60-59

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Dec. 3, 2016) – Freshman Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) recorded a game-high 20 points and brought down 11 rebounds for her first career double-double, as she helped the USMMA women's basketball team edge visiting Purchase College, 60-59, on Saturday afternoon at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The victory improves the Mariners to 2-2 (1-1 Skyline), while the Panthers fall to 2-4 (1-1 Skyline) in defeat.
 
Senior Rachel Wehlburg (Herndon, Va.) recorded 10 second-half points to finish the game with 12 points, to go along with five rebounds. Freshman Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) led all players in the game with 15 rebounds, while also contributing six points for Merchant Marine.
 
Junior Myckenzie Toler (Prunedale, Calif.) also had six points as well as six boards off the bench, classmate Gabrielle Salazar (Memphis, Tenn.) added five points, seniors Kelsey Hofmann (Adel, Iowa) and Allie Drake (Centereach, N.Y.) both had four points apiece, and freshman Taylor Hightower (White Plains, Md.) chipped in with three to round out the Mariner scorers.
 
Three players scored in double-figures for Purchase, led by junior Kayla Ortiz with 16 points. Sophomore Amber Jones contributed 15 points with a team-high eight rebounds and senior Frances Minaya also had 15 points in the losing effort.
 
Up next, the Mariners will travel to Brooklyn this coming Tuesday, Dec. 6, for a Skyline Conference tilt against St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn.
