KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Dec. 1, 2016) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team lost its home- and Skyline Conference-opener to Farmingdale State, 67-48, on Thursday night at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The defeat drops the Mariners' record to 1-2 (0-1 Skyline) on the year, while the Rams improve to 2-2 (1-0 Skyline) with the victory.
Freshman Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) led USMMA with 14 points, while also tying for the team-best of six rebounds with senior Rachel Wehlburg (Herndon, Va.) and fellow freshman Taylor Hightower (White Plains, Md.). Hightower also led the Mariner bench with six points, while juniors Samantha Drake (Centereach, N.Y.) and Myckenzie Toler (Memphis, Tenn.) both had five points each off the bench.
For Farmingdale State, sophomore AJ Smith led all players in the game with 18 points and nine rebounds to go along with two blocks. Freshman Ahyana Green added 12 points for the Rams, while junior Tyra Harrison dished out a game-high four assists.
The Mariners are back in action this Saturday, Dec. 3, when they host another Skyline contest, this against the Panthers of Purchase College. Tipoff is scheduled for 12-noon at the Liebertz Gym.
