NEW YORK (Nov. 22, 2016) – On Tuesday night, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team lost a tough road game at Hunter College, 49-46. The Mariners fall to an even 1-1 on the young season, while the Hawks improve to 3-1.
USMMA was up by as many as 14 points, 38-24, just over midway through the third quarter, but Hunter rattled off a debilitating 21-2 run over the next 10-plus minutes to take a 45-40 lead with just 2:55 to play in the fourth. The Mariners fought back to within one point in the final minute of the game, but missed two potential game-tying shots in the final 11 seconds.
Senior Kelsey Hofmann (Adel, Iowa) scored a team-high 10 points, while classmate Allie Drake (Centereach, N.Y.) recorded eight points and a team-best seven rebounds. Senior Rachel Whelberg (Herndon, Va.) notched seven points and freshmen Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) and Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) contributed five and four points, respectively, to round out the Merchant Marine starters.
Off the bench, senior Jordy Macbeth (Orlando, Fla.) and junior Myckenzie Toler (Prunedale, Calif.) both added four points, while junior Samantha Drake (Centereach, N.Y.) and freshman Taylor Hightower (White Plains, Md.) chipped in with two points apiece. Sammie Drake dished out a game-best four assists on the night.
For Hunter, Theresa Leung led all players with 13 points, while Ashley Yu drained 12 points and Selina Lim produced 11. Edina Music brought down a game-high nine points off the bench.
The Mariners return to action after the Thanksgiving break, next Thursday, Dec. 1, for the Skyline Conference-opener at home against Farmingdale State. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. as the early game of a doubleheader at the Liebertz Gymnasium.
